What makes a lead magnet worth sending in a DM?
A lead magnet is a free asset someone accepts in exchange for a way to reach them again, and on Instagram it also has to survive where it is delivered. A DM thread is a phone screen and a few seconds of attention. That rules out most of what the big lists suggest, and rules in anything you can send whole, ask in the thread, or reduce to one link.
Format matters more than topic here. Artist Jai Nova used Inrō to send fan surveys by DM and saw an 85 to 90% open rate, with close to 100% response among engaged fans; the case study has the numbers. An asset people answer inside the thread needs no landing page at all.
How this generator works
- Name the offer. Pick what you sell and the generator ranks nine idea patterns for that business, not for everyone.
- Add the question. Type who it is for and the question you already get, and every idea is built from those two lines.
- Take the delivery. Each idea shows whether it sends in the DM or needs a page, plus a keyword and the message.
Why five built ideas beat a list of sixty
- Every idea names your inputs. The title, the reasoning and the message all carry what you typed. Nothing arrives as a generic free guide.
- The delivery is decided. Each idea says whether it sends in the DM, gets answered in the thread, or needs a page, before you build it.
- A keyword and a message. You leave with the comment trigger to post and the DM that delivers it, not only a title to go and write.
- A campaign you can check. Artist Jai Nova tripled Spotify followers and streams in three months on DM surveys and fan segmentation.
What eight lists of lead magnet ideas actually contain
Search for lead magnet ideas and every page you land on is a list. In August 2026 we read all eight of the big ones and counted what they actually give you.
"With a number attached" means a figure or a named case sits in that idea's own section; a statistic at the top of a page cannot tell you which of sixty ideas to build. Ten of the twelve are the publisher's own customer stories. Two well-known lists are missing: Heyflow's page wouldn't open for us, and Zendesk's redirected to a French version.

Ground rules for a lead magnet
- Answer a question you already get. The one you screenshot and re-answer every week is the one people will comment a keyword for.
- Distrust format rankings. GetResponse's own study asked 790 marketers which format performed best, in March to May 2020, and measured no conversion rates.
- Make it finishable tonight. Anything that takes a week to consume needs an email and a landing page, so choose that on purpose.
- Point it at the paid thing. If finishing your freebie leaves no obvious next step, it collects email addresses and nothing else.
Where a lead magnet fails
Copying a list
A checklist that could belong to anyone gets saved and never opened, because nothing in it proves you wrote it.
Deciding delivery last
Choosing the format first and the delivery later is how a mini course ends up promised in a DM with nowhere to go.
No next step
A freebie that finishes cleanly and asks for nothing leaves you an email address and no reason to send anything.
The list you're looking for is not a list. Pick the question you already answer every week, choose a shape that can be finished in one sitting, and decide before you build it whether it sends in the DM or needs a page.
Deliver your freebie automatically
Post the keyword, and Inrō sends the freebie in seconds on Meta's official API, then tags who took it. The free plan covers 100 active contacts a month, 3 automations, 3 campaigns and 50 AI credits.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good lead magnet?
A good lead magnet solves one problem you already get asked about, and it can be finished in one sitting. Those two tests do more work than any format ranking. If the problem is one you answer every week in your DMs, the people who ask it recognise the offer instantly, so commenting costs no thought. If the asset takes an hour rather than a week, they finish it while they still remember why they wanted it, which is when a next step is worth offering. A checklist that fails both tests loses to a single page that passes both, whatever the listicles rank higher.
What lead magnet should I offer on Instagram?
Start from the delivery, not from the format. Instagram gives you a message thread on a phone, so the first question is whether your asset can be sent whole, answered inside the thread, or reduced to one link someone taps once. A checklist, a swipe file, a one-page answer and a set of scoring questions all pass. A live workshop, a seven day email course and a members area do not, because they need an address and a schedule. Neither is better. The mistake is choosing an asset from a list, promising it in a caption, and only then finding it cannot arrive the way you promised.
How do I deliver a lead magnet through Instagram DMs?
The short version: you post something that names a single word, people comment that word, and an automation replies in the DM with the asset or the link. Everything after that is a question of what the word is and what the post says, which is why this page suggests a keyword and then hands you on. Test the word itself on the comment-to-DM keyword planner, which covers how matching actually behaves and what breaks it. Write the post around it with the comment-to-DM caption generator. This page stops at the idea, the keyword and the first message, because those are the parts nobody else hands you.
Do lead magnets actually work on Instagram?
They work when the asset suits the thread. Artist Jai Nova used Inrō to send fan surveys by DM and saw an 85 to 90% open rate on those surveys, close to 100% response among engaged fans, and three times the Spotify followers and streams in three months. Read it carefully: a survey, answered inside the message, sent to an audience that already followed the artist. It is evidence that an asset built for the thread gets answered, not a promise that any freebie converts a stranger. Nobody publishes a reliable conversion rate by format, and we don't invent one.
Which lead magnet format converts best?
Nobody knows, and the figures usually quoted do not mean what they seem to. The table that circulates as conversion rates by format, with video at 24.2% and written content at 22.8%, comes from GetResponse's Best Lead Magnets for Lead Generation study report. Read at source in August 2026, those are the share of 790 surveyed marketers naming that category their own best performer, from a survey fielded in March to May 2020, in which 60% of respondents were solopreneurs recruited largely through GetResponse's own blog. The study measures no campaign conversion rate at all. Aggregator pages then attach figures the study never contained.
Do I need an email tool to run a lead magnet?
Not to deliver one. If the asset sends in the DM or gets answered in the thread, the conversation is the delivery and the contact record is the list. You need an email tool the moment you want to reach the same person outside Instagram, or when the asset arrives over several days. Inrō captures the email inside the DM and connects to 8,000+ tools through Make.com, Zapier and native webhooks, pushing contacts into Mailchimp, Klaviyo, ActiveCampaign, ConvertKit or Beehiiv in real time. Deliver in the DM first; add the email tool once you have something to send.
Should I use a landing page or a DM keyword?
Decide it by what the asset needs, not by preference. A DM keyword suits anything the person can finish right there: a checklist, a swipe file, a one-page answer, a set of questions you score for them. It removes the tap out of the app and starts a conversation you can reply to. A landing page earns its friction when you genuinely need an email address to deliver at all, because the asset arrives in parts, needs a login, or has a date attached. The generator labels every idea with its route for exactly this reason, so you decide before you build rather than after you have promised.
Is a giveaway a lead magnet?
No, and the difference is worth keeping straight. A lead magnet trades something useful for a way to reach someone again, and the person who takes it wanted that specific thing. A giveaway trades a chance of winning for an entry, and most entrants want the prize rather than you. Both fill a contact list, and the two lists behave nothing alike afterwards. If you want to run a draw, that is its own job with its own mechanics, covered on the Instagram giveaway comment picker. What this page generates is the other kind: assets people ask for by name because they already have the problem it solves.
Is this generator free, and does it use AI?
It is free, there is no sign-up, and it does not use AI. Every idea is assembled in your browser from nine named patterns, eight business types and the two lines you type, which is why the same inputs always produce the same five ideas and why every line traces back to something you entered. Nothing is stored and nothing is sent anywhere. The tradeoff is worth stating: a language model would phrase an idea more fluently for an unusual niche, and a template will never invent a category outside its list. What a template does better is stay accountable, because you can see which input produced which line.
