Instagram Carousel Text Splitter

Paste your text and get it split into slide-sized chunks that never cut a sentence, counted against both carousel limits: the app's 20 slides and the API's 10.

Split your text into slides

A sentence is never cut in half unless it is longer than the budget on its own, and then it breaks between words. Blank lines and list markers always start a new slide. The app takes 20 slides and the publishing API takes 10, so both counts are shown. The split happens in your browser as you type; your draft is never uploaded.

How many slides can an Instagram carousel have?

An Instagram carousel is one post holding several photos or videos that people swipe through, and Instagram's own Help Center says you can share up to 20 of them. Meta's Content Publishing documentation says something else: carousels are limited to 10. Both are current. The app takes 20, the publishing API takes 10, so anything you schedule through a third party stops at 10.

That split is why tools disagree. We tested 14 carousel tools in August 2026: five state a slide limit and two of those still say 10. None of them checks your slide count against any limit.

How the splitter works

  1. Paste the text. Blank lines and list markers become hard breaks, so one idea keeps one slide.
  2. Pick the size. Bigger type means fewer characters; the budget moves from 100 to 300 as you choose.
  3. Read both counts. Each slide shows its characters, and the total is checked against 20 slides and against 10.

How the slide budget is set

Characters per slide

Characters per line times lines per slide = the character budget, then whole sentences are packed in until the next one will not fit

Example:

At Standard, 4 lines, 200 characters, with the topic writing carousels, the sample text splits into four slides of 185, 131, 98 and 121 characters, and no sentence is cut. The hook counts them and reads: 4 things about writing carousels that took me too long to learn, 63 characters. With the Save it ask closing, that is 6 of 20 slides in the app, 6 of 10 through the publishing API, and a longest slide of 185 of 200 characters.

Where each number comes from:

  • Fifty characters a line. WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.8 caps a block of text at 80 characters a line, Matthew Butterick's Practical Typography gives 45 to 90, and Baymard Institute, 10 May 2022, gives 50 to 75 with 50 to 60 optimal. Fifty sits inside all three.
  • Two, four or six lines a slide. Our call: how much a reader takes in one swipe, not a platform rule.
  • Twenty slides. Instagram Help Center, August 2026.
  • Ten slides. Meta's Content Publishing documentation, August 2026.
  • The hook and the ask. Fixed patterns, filled from your topic and your own slide count.

Pick the text size first: the same words at 100 characters need almost twice the slides.

Why split the text before you design

  • Both limits, every time. The count runs against Instagram's 20 slides and the API's 10 at the same time. A scheduled post won't fail at upload.
  • A budget you can trace. The character figure is built from published line length research, not from a number a tool invented.
  • Sentences stay whole. Nothing breaks mid sentence unless one sentence is longer than the budget, and then it breaks between words.
  • A hook and an ask. The first and last slides arrive written from fixed patterns, counted into the total like any other slide.

Every published number for the carousel slide limit

The limit has moved twice, and one widely repeated figure was never official. Every source below was still live in August 2026.

Four rules for carousel text

  1. Write it as text first. A carousel drafted inside a design tool takes its length from the template rather than from the idea.
  2. Keep a line under 80 characters. WCAG 2.1 criterion 1.4.8, updated 9 March 2026, sets that ceiling for a block of text.
  3. Count before you open the editor. Past 20 slides is a rewrite, and past 10 breaks any scheduler that posts through the API.
  4. Leave the last slide one ask. A slide carrying a save, a follow and a comment prompt tends to collect none of the three.

Where a carousel breaks

Designing before splitting

A template decides the length before the idea does, so the text gets padded or cut to fit the slides.

Trusting a stale limit

Two of the fourteen tools we tested still say 10 slides, a figure Instagram replaced in the app in August 2024.

Ignoring the API cap

A 14 slide carousel posts fine by hand and fails in any scheduler, because the publishing API stops at 10.

Which settings fit which account

Creator

Creator

Use Big text at 100 characters. A creator carousel is read at arm's length, and two lines a slide is what survives that.

Coach

Coach

Standard at 200 suits a teaching sequence, because a step needs its reason on the same slide as the instruction.

E-commerce brand

E-commerce brand

Stay under 10 slides. Product carousels are usually scheduled, and anything past 10 won't publish through the API.

Agency

Agency

Run each client's draft at Dense first. If it still needs more than 20 slides, the draft is two posts rather than one.

Instagram takes 20 slides in the app and 10 through its publishing API, and none of the 14 tools we tested checks either. Write the carousel as plain text, split it where the sentences end, then count the slides before you open a design tool.

Frequently asked questions

How many slides can an Instagram carousel have?

Twenty in the Instagram app, ten through the publishing API. Instagram's Help Center states that you can share a post with up to 20 photos and videos as a single post, on a page that carries no date, so read it as current rather than as an event. Meta's Content Publishing documentation, opened the same day, states that carousels are limited to 10 images, videos, or a mix of the two. Neither is out of date. They describe different surfaces: the first is what you can do by hand in the app, the second is what any third party tool can publish for you. By hand you have 20 slides. Through a tool you have 10.

Did Instagram ever allow 15 slides in a carousel?

No. Fifteen was a test, not a limit, and Instagram never published the number. It surfaced on 13 March 2024, when Lia Haberman posted a screenshot of an in-app notice on Threads and wrote that you may soon be able to share up to 15 photos or videos in a carousel. Social Media Today picked it up the next day, and in that coverage Meta said only that it was testing the ability to add more than ten photos with a small group of people. More than ten, never fifteen. Five months later Adam Mosseri announced twenty for everyone. No Instagram blog post, help article or developer page has ever printed fifteen.

How many characters should go on one carousel slide?

Instagram publishes no figure, so anyone quoting one is quoting themselves. This tool builds its budget from two parts and labels both. The first is characters per line, where WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.8 caps a block of text at 80, Matthew Butterick's Practical Typography gives 45 to 90, and Baymard Institute gives 50 to 75 with 50 to 60 optimal. Fifty sits inside all three. The second is lines per slide, a craft call about how much a reader takes in one swipe. Two lines gives 100 characters, four gives 200, six gives 300. For scale, the budgets shipped by the tools tested here run from 80 to 1,000 characters, and not one cites a source.

How do I turn a blog post into an Instagram carousel?

Cut it before you design it. Paste the post, set the text size, and read where the splits land. Anything that fits one slide is one idea. Anything needing three slides is usually three ideas that sat in one paragraph for a reader who could scroll. Delete rather than shrink the type, because a run of twenty dense slides loses people before the end. Once the text is settled, write the caption with the caption generator, and use the caption formatter if you need line breaks to survive posting. Design last. The layout question answers itself once the text is in pieces.

Does this carousel splitter use AI?

No. It is a rule based splitter, so the same text with the same settings always produces the same slides. The rules are short enough to state in full: blank lines and list markers are hard breaks, a sentence ends at a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark followed by a space and a capital, a short list of abbreviations such as e.g. and i.e. is skipped, and sentences are packed into a slide until the next will not fit. A sentence longer than the whole budget is the only case that breaks mid sentence, and even then it breaks between words. Nothing is sent anywhere: no upload, no account, no stored copy.

What size should Instagram carousel slides be?

1080 by 1350 pixels is the usual choice and it is still supported. Instagram's Help Center article on image resolution states that a photo keeps its original resolution at a width of 1,080 pixels with a height between 566 and 1,440 pixels, so a 1080 by 1350 slide sits inside that. Two further lines from the Help Center are worth knowing before you build. The orientation you pick applies to the whole post, so you cannot mix a portrait slide with a landscape slide in one carousel. And a video inside a carousel is not treated as a reel, so it will not appear in the Reels tab. Both come from Meta's own documentation (August 2026).

Why does my scheduler only allow 10 carousel slides?

Because Meta's publishing API caps carousels at 10. The Content Publishing documentation states that carousels are limited to 10 images, videos, or a mix of the two, and the Instagram Platform changelog, which is actively maintained and carried entries in June 2026, has never recorded a change to that number since carousel publishing was added on 15 March 2022. Every scheduling tool that posts on your behalf goes through that API, so the cap is inherited rather than chosen. It is not a bug and no plan upgrade removes it. If your draft needs eleven or more slides, post it by hand or make it two posts.

What should the first and last carousel slide say?

The first slide has one job, which is to earn the first swipe, and the last has one job, which is to name a single action. This tool fills both from fixed patterns: four hook shapes, one of which counts your own slides back to you, and four asks covering save, comment, follow and a straight question. They are starting points rather than finished lines. If you want to work on the opening properly, the hook generator goes deeper on first line craft than a fixed pattern can. The rule worth keeping is that a closing slide asking for a save, a follow and a comment tends to collect none of the three.

Which carousel tools did you test for this page?

Fourteen, opened and used on 2 August 2026. Twelve take text. Three split it deterministically and show a per-slide character count: InstantDM, Brand Update and CreatorFlow. Contentdrips splits where you type a marker yourself. PostNitro, Predis, WaveGen, aiCarousels, CarouselMaker and GravityWrite generate with a model, Pixlr is a canvas editor, and Splitext is an iOS app that could not be tested in a browser. Renderfire and Postplanify split an image rather than text. Five of the fourteen state a slide limit and two, Pixlr and Renderfire, still say ten. None compares your slide count to any limit. Piktochart, Canva and splitimage.im blocked automated access, so they are excluded rather than counted.
