Where the invisible characters sit
The dots in the preview mark where an invisible character sits. They are drawn on screen only and are never part of what you copy. Instagram says nothing about blank lines in captions; this is a reported workaround you should check on your own account. Meta sets the 2,200 character cap itself, in its Instagram Platform reference. The formatter reads your caption in this tab only, and what you copy is the only thing that ever leaves it. Why do Instagram captions lose their line breaks?
An Instagram caption formatter rewrites the whitespace in your caption so the blank lines you typed survive the composer, usually by placing one invisible character on each empty line. Instagram documents none of it. Meta's Instagram Platform reference gives a caption maximum of 2,200 characters and says nothing about newlines, and the two Help Center articles on adding and editing a caption say nothing either (August 2026).
The workaround is a community habit, not a feature, and it costs you characters. We ran one test caption through ten popular line break tools in August 2026 and got back four different invisible characters, one tool that added nothing, and four that charge a character on every line instead of only the empty ones.

The caption the tool opens on is 163 characters, with three trailing spaces on the first line and three blank lines. Stripping the trailing spaces takes away 3, protecting each blank line with U+2800 puts back 3, and the formatted caption returns at 163 characters, three of them invisible.

We fed every tool below the same 56 character caption in August 2026: three trailing spaces, one empty line, one doubled empty line. The counts are what each tool actually put on the clipboard, read back character by character:

Type the breaks where you want them, then decide whether to protect the empty lines. The composer accepts a return key, and several guides updated between 2024 and 2026 say that is now all you need. Others published in those same years say the app drops empty lines and you have to paste an invisible character onto each one. Neither camp cites Instagram, because Instagram publishes nothing on the subject. So strip the trailing spaces first, format the caption here, post one test and look at what came out. The tool shows the plain version and the protected version together, which makes that test one copy and one paste.
Four are in circulation. The ten tools we tested in August 2026 split between U+2800 braille pattern blank, U+200B zero width space, U+2063 invisible separator and U+2009 thin space. There is a mechanical reason to prefer the first: Unicode classes U+2800 as a symbol, while U+2009 is a space by Unicode's own definition and U+200B and U+2063 are formatting characters. Any routine written to trim or collapse whitespace therefore has a definition that catches three of the four and not the braille blank. That is an argument about Unicode, not a claim about Instagram, which documents none of this.

Almost nobody says so out loud. Of seventeen guides about Instagram line breaks we read in August 2026, two mention the cost, and of the ten tools we tested, one does. The arithmetic matters at length: a ten paragraph caption spends nine characters on spacing before you have written a word, and a tool that charges by the line spends several times that.
Nothing, across five surfaces checked on 2 August 2026. Meta's Instagram Platform reference for the media endpoint describes the caption parameter, gives the maximum of 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags and 20 at tags, and never mentions newlines. The Content Publishing guide carries a URL encoding section covering brackets and braces only. The two Help Center articles, one on adding a caption and one on editing an existing one, are four steps each and mention no formatting. The Instagram Platform changelog, which runs from February 2018 to June 2026, has no entry about captions at all.
No, and the spread is wider than you'd guess. We gave ten line break tools one identical caption in August 2026 and read back what each put on the clipboard, character by character. Three inserted U+2800, three inserted U+200B, two inserted U+2063, one inserted U+2009, and one handed the caption back unchanged. Four of the ten put a character on every line rather than only the empty ones, so the same layout cost six characters there and two or three elsewhere.
Possibly, and the evidence is thin. The registered Unicode name of the default character is braille pattern blank, and software that reads characters out by name has a name available to read. Of the ten tools we tested in August 2026, one mentions assistive software at all: Postiz, which says older screen readers and braille displays announce U+2800 by that name. None of the seventeen guides we read mentions screen readers once. We haven't put a screen reader on it ourselves, so treat that as reported rather than measured.
Two causes get blamed and only one of them is yours to control. The first is a trailing space at the end of a line, which most guides name as the thing that kills a paragraph break, and stripping those is the first thing this tool does. The second is that the empty line itself gets dropped between the composer and the published caption, which is what the invisible character exists to work around. Instagram has never described either, so post one test caption with the formatter on and one with it off.
No, and that is deliberate. Instagram has no bold or italic. What looks like bold in a caption is a separate set of Unicode characters that resemble letters, which means search, hashtags and screen readers stop recognising the words, a real cost worth reading about first. Those characters and that warning belong together on the fonts generator, so they live there. This page stays on whitespace: line breaks, empty lines and trailing spaces. The caption you copy from here is your own text with its spacing repaired, every letter still the letter it appears to be.
The formatting works on any text you paste, but a bio is a different surface with different rules. A bio holds 150 characters rather than 2,200, so one invisible character costs proportionally about fifteen times more, and the bio generator counts every break against that 150 as you type. Whether breaks survive in a bio is genuinely open: Instagram documents nothing and the published guides contradict each other. The bio generator says exactly that and does not resolve it either, because Instagram has never said either way.
