Instagram DM Automation ROI Calculator

Enter your comment volume, reply rates and offer value, and this calculator prices what manual DM handling leaves on the table each month, with every assumption editable and sourced.

Calculate your DM automation ROI

Edit the assumptions (every default is labeled with its source)
extra conversions per month
revenue left on the table per month
per year at this rate
hours of replying automation handles monthly

An estimate, not a forecast: five multiplied assumptions compound, and your conversion rate moves the result far more than your open rate. Nothing is pulled from your account.

What is DM automation ROI?

DM automation ROI is the return you get from letting software answer your Instagram comments and DMs, measured against what the tool costs in fees and setup time. The return comes from two places: conversions recovered from comments that would otherwise go unanswered, and hours recovered from replies you no longer type by hand.

A manual comment-to-DM funnel leaks in four places: comments missed while you are offline, replies that land after the person has cooled off, hand-typed messages that drift off script, and follow-ups that never happen. This calculator prices those leaks against the cost of automating them. For reference, DMs sent through Inrō average a 90% open rate, a 60% reply rate and a 28% click-through rate on links, based on Inrō customer data, 2024-2025.

How this calculator works

  1. Enter your funnel. Comments per promotional post, posts per month, and what one conversion is worth to you.
  2. Set your rates. Every default is prefilled, editable, and labeled with where it comes from.
  3. Read the gap. Extra conversions, revenue per month and per year, and the hours automation hands back.

How the math works

Extra monthly revenue from automation

Extra revenue = monthly comments x (automated reply rate - manual reply rate) x DM open rate x conversion rate x value per conversion

Example:

200 comments x (95% - 50%) x 80% open rate x 3% conversion x €50 order value = €108 extra per month, about €1,296 a year

These notes exist to back up the calculator's prefilled defaults. Every default carries one of three labels: a named published source with a year, Inrō customer data, or an editable assumption, and the full label sits next to each input inside the calculator. The FAQ covers where the industry's favourite open-rate stat actually comes from.

  • Open rate 80%: held below Inrō's own 90% average (customer data, 2024-2025), because the industry's 80 to 90% figure has no primary study behind it.
  • Manual reply rate 50%: a self-assessment; count last week's comments and your real replies, then correct it.
  • Automated reply rate 95%: mechanism, not a stat; the official API answers effectively every triggering comment.
  • Conversion rate 3%: the input your result is most sensitive to; no independent benchmark exists, so replace it with your own rate after your first campaign or two.
  • 45 seconds per reply: time yourself on ten real replies and enter what you measure.

The result multiplies five assumptions, so validate your conversion rate first; it moves the output more than anything else.

Why run the numbers before you automate

  • See the break-even. At the defaults, 2,000 comments a month works out to about €1,080 extra monthly revenue; 40 comments may not cover a subscription.
  • Price the leak, not just the labor. The revenue-left-on-the-table line prices the comments that never get answered, which is where most decisions settle.
  • Speed is the mechanism. A commenter is at peak intent for minutes, mid-scroll, and automation answers in seconds, at 2am and 2pm alike.
  • Show it to someone. Every input is labeled and editable, so a boss or client can dispute an assumption and watch the result move. One published example: WeInk reached 6,216 contacts with one DM campaign at a 90% open rate.

Four tips from real funnels

  1. Ask one question before the link. A single qualifying question in the first DM tags the lead for follow-up and keeps the conversation open.
  2. Put the keyword everywhere. Say the trigger word in the caption, pin it as a comment, and repeat it in the Reel itself.
  3. Re-run the math with your own data. After two campaigns, replace the 3% conversion default with your measured rate and watch how far the estimate moves.
  4. Follow up inside the 24-hour window. Message the people who opened but never clicked while Meta's messaging window is still open; it is the cheapest extra conversion in the funnel.

Three ways this estimate goes wrong

Guessing your reply rate

Most accounts answer far fewer comments than they believe, which inflates every number downstream.

Borrowing a vendor rate

Published conversion rates range from 2% to 60% depending on who is selling the software.

Treating it as a forecast

It prices a gap under stated assumptions. It does not promise revenue.

Which numbers to use, by who you are

Creator

Creator

Value a conversion at what a brand pays you, not at a product price you do not have.

Coach

Coach

Use booked calls as your conversion and keep the rate near 5%, not the 15% guides promise.

E-commerce brand

E-commerce brand

Use average order value and a purchase rate of 2 to 5% until your own data replaces it.

Agency

Agency

Run it once per client and show the annual figure next to your monthly retainer.

Your reply rate on your busiest week is the ceiling of your funnel. Automation does not write better DMs than you; it answers the comments you were always going to miss, in seconds instead of hours. Price that gap and you have your answer, whichever way it comes out.

Frequently asked questions

Is DM automation allowed on Instagram?

Yes, through Meta's official API. Instagram professional accounts (business or creator) can use API-based tools for messaging, and comment-triggered private replies are a built-in API feature, not a workaround. Meta's Instagram Platform documentation sets the rules: your app can respond to a message within 24 hours, and a human agent tag extends that window to 7 days when a person needs more time to reply. Meta also requires that "automated chat experiences must disclose that a person is interacting with an automated service", a rule it calls out for California and Germany (Meta for Developers, checked July 2026).

The dividing line for account safety is tool class. Official API tools authenticate through Meta's own login flow and never ask for your password. Scraper and password-based bots simulate human taps, and they are the documented ban vector. Inrō is a verified Meta Tech Provider and covers this in detail on its Instagram automation safety page.

Is Instagram DM automation worth it?

It is worth it when three numbers line up: your monthly comment volume, what a conversion is worth to you, and the gap between your manual reply rate and an automated one. If comment volume times value per conversion clearly beats the tool cost plus setup time, automate; that is the calculation this page runs. It is usually not worth it if you get a handful of comments a month, have no offer or link to send people to, or sell something so high-touch that every conversation needs a human from the first message. Run your own numbers before anyone's marketing, including ours, decides for you.

What conversion rate should I expect from comment-to-DM?

Nobody has published an independent benchmark, so be suspicious of any page that states one number with confidence. Vendor-reported ranges run wide: roughly 40 to 60% for email opt-ins from a lead magnet (CreatorFlow, its own campaign data, methodology undisclosed), 1.94% of DM conversations booking a call in the largest disclosed vendor sample (SetSmart, 828,000 conversations across 391 businesses), and low single digits for direct purchases. Your offer, price point and audience matter more than the channel does. Start from this calculator's conservative defaults, then replace them with your own data after two or three campaigns.

What is the real open rate of Instagram DMs?

No platform-published figure exists. Meta has never released an Instagram DM open rate, and the 80 to 90% claim circulating in this niche traces back to 2017 Facebook Messenger campaign data published by Neil Patel, recycled through vendor blogs ever since. What holds up: the mechanics favor DMs. A DM lands as a push notification in an app the person already uses, in a private thread, which is why DMs out-open email even without a published platform stat. Inrō's own measurement is a 90% average open rate, based on Inrō customer data, 2024-2025. One caveat: DMs to people who do not follow you can land in the message requests folder, where many go unseen, so expect lower opens on cold audiences.

How much time does DM automation actually save?

Multiply your monthly automated replies by your real seconds per reply. At this calculator's defaults, 200 replies at 45 seconds each is about 2.5 hours a month; 2,000 replies is 25 hours. No published research measures per-DM handling time, so the honest answer depends on an input only you can supply: time yourself on ten replies and use that. For one customer's own account of it, WeInk co-founder Anaïs Garnier says: "I used to do this manually. Inrō saves me at least 2 hours everyday."

Will automated DMs make my account look spammy?

They can, and no research exists on how audiences perceive comment-gated links either way, so treat this as judgment rather than data. Comment gating annoys people when the reply is slow, the gated content is thin, or every post is gated. It reads fine when the reply is instant, the link delivers exactly what the post promised, and the link also lives somewhere public for people who would rather not comment. Two guardrails help. First, the commenter asked for the DM, so sending one is not spam; chasing a non-replier with three follow-ups is. Second, Inrō sends one DM per user per post by default, so a viral post never double-messages anyone.

Does DM automation work for small accounts?

The mechanics work at any size; the economics depend on volume. The Rival IQ 2025 benchmark report puts median Instagram engagement at 0.36% of followers per post, likes and shares included, so a 5,000-follower account at the median sees under 20 interactions per post, and comments are a minority of those. At that volume automation still catches the comments you would have missed, but the revenue gain may not cover a subscription until your reach or posting rate grows. Run the calculator with your real numbers and compare the annual figure to the annual tool cost. If they are close, decide on the hours saved, not the revenue.

Is Instagram DM automation free?

You can start free. Meta Business Suite includes basic keyword auto-replies at no cost, without flows, audiences or analytics. Inrō's free plan covers 100 active contacts, 3 automations and 3 campaigns a month, enough to test a comment-to-DM funnel on a real post. Paid plans start at €12.99 a month for Pro, and entry paid plans across the market run about €12 to $30 a month (both as of July 2026). Either way, the subscription is usually the smallest line in the ROI math. The setup hour and the quality of the thing you send people to matter more.

Where does the 90% DM open rate stat come from?

We looked for the primary source behind the 80 to 90% open rate that appears on nearly every DM automation page, and could not find one. The trail leads back to a 2017 post by Neil Patel reporting 88% opens on his own Facebook Messenger campaigns, before Instagram DM automation existed, and vendor blogs have cited each other in a loop since. Meta has never published an Instagram DM open rate.

What survives scrutiny is the mechanism: a DM arrives as a push notification inside an app the person already has open, in a one-to-one thread, so it structurally out-opens email. Inrō's own average is 90%, based on Inrō customer data, 2024-2025, and it is labeled as customer data wherever it appears. The calculator on this page still defaults to 80%, below our own figure, because a calculator should not lean on its maker's best case.
