DM spam filtering

DM spam filtering

Definition

DM spam filtering keeps unwanted Instagram messages out of the conversations you work in. Instagram sorts them into Requests and Hidden Requests. In Inrō, you move a conversation to spam and it leaves your Inbox.

DM spam filtering is how unwanted Instagram messages are kept away from the conversations you work in. Instagram sorts new conversations into folders before you see them. In Inrō, you move a conversation to spam yourself, and it leaves your Inbox for the Spam list.

How does Instagram filter DMs before they reach you?

A new conversation from a follower starts in the Primary folder. A new conversation from someone who does not follow you starts in the Requests folder. Once you reply through an app such as Inrō, the conversation moves to the General folder, whatever your inbox settings (Meta for Developers, Instagram Messaging API, checked October 1, 2026, developers.facebook.com).

Requests hidden by your Hidden Words preferences go to a separate Hidden Requests folder (Instagram Help Center, checked October 1, 2026, View, delete, or report spam on Instagram).

How do you move a conversation to spam in Inrō?

Inrō does not mark anyone as spam on its own. You do it from:

  • the Mark as menu on a conversation in the Inbox, then Move to spam
  • several selected conversations at once, then Move to spam
  • the contact's status badge, then Add contact to spam list

The contact's status becomes Spam, and all their conversations leave the main list of the Inrō Inbox. You find them in Inbox settings, under Spam list, with a count. The list lives in Inrō only: nothing moves in the Instagram app.

Do automations still reach contacts on your spam list?

Scenarios, yes. The Spam status sorts your Inbox; it does not pause automation. The only status that makes Inrō skip message steps is a DM opt-out.

DM campaigns to your contact list leave them out. A campaign only picks contacts whose status is Active, Commented or Live Commented, and Spam is none of those.

To keep a spammer out of your scenarios too, put them in a folder that your excluded contacts rules leave out, or opt them out.

How does a conversation leave the spam list?

There are three ways:

  • In the Spam list, tap the icon next to the conversation and confirm Remove conversation from spam? The contact becomes Active.
  • On the contact's status badge, choose Remove contact from spam list. Inrō works out their status again from their messages and comments.
  • The contact sends you a new DM or comments on your post. Inrō updates their status, and the conversation comes back to your Inbox.

To list them all, use a contact filter on Status, set to Spam. Spam in your comments is a separate job, covered by the template that hides negative comments. Other terms are in the Inrō glossary of Instagram automation.
