DM opt-out

DM opt-out

Definition

A DM opt-out is a contact's request to stop receiving a business's automated Instagram messages. Meta requires an ongoing way to opt out, respected immediately. In Inrō, it is a contact status that stops automations and campaigns.

A DM opt-out is a contact's request to stop receiving your automated Instagram messages. Meta's policies require a way to opt out that is respected immediately. In Inrō, an opt-out is a status on the contact: from then on, your automations and campaigns stop messaging them.

What does Meta require?

Meta's Developer Policies, section 5, cover every app built on the Instagram Messaging API. They ask for a legally sufficient way for people to opt out of messaging, available at any time, and they require that every request to block, discontinue or opt out is respected immediately (Meta Developer Policies, last updated February 3, 2026, developers.facebook.com/devpolicy). The other account rules are in Inrō's guide to Instagram automation safety.

How does a contact opt out in Inrō?

Turn on opt-out detection from the Opt-out detection card on the Scenarios page before your first flow goes live. Once it is on, a contact is opted out when:

  • they send a text message that contains one of your keywords, such as "stop" or "unsubscribe"
  • they tap the unsubscribe entry Inrō adds to your Instagram DM menu, with the label you choose
  • they ask the AI agent that answers your DMs to stop, in their own words

You can send a short confirmation message the moment a keyword or the menu entry opts someone out. You can also opt a contact out yourself from their status, or with the Opt-out contact action in a scenario.

What does an opt-out block, and what does it not?

Once a contact is opted out, every message step in your scenarios is skipped for them, and DM campaigns to your contact list leave them out. Steps that send nothing, such as a folder change or an HTTP request, still run.

An opt-out stops automation, not conversation. You can still reply by hand from the Inrō Inbox. They stay in your CRM with their history, and a contact filter on Status, set to Opt-out, lists everyone who asked.

How do you put a contact back?

The status sticks. A new message or comment from the contact does not switch them back. Only you can: choose "Remove contact from opt-out list" on the contact, or use the Update contact status step in a scenario, set to Opt-in contact. Do it only when the person asks you to.

To keep contacts out of automations for your own reasons, use excluded contacts instead. Other terms are in the Inrō glossary of Instagram automation.
