About

Someone replies DISCOUNT to your story and gets your code and shop link by DM. No tap in 2 hours? One reminder. Copy the Instagram template.

Someone replies DISCOUNT to your story and gets your code by DM, followed by a card that opens your shop. Everyone who taps the card goes into the folder "Story discount: clicked", and anyone who has not tapped after 2 hours gets one reminder. You copy the template and swap in your own code.

Whole story reply discount flow in Inrō: keyword, code message, shop link, Story discount folder and 2-hour reminder

What the template does, step by step

1. Someone replies DISCOUNT to your story

A story reply lands in your Inrō inbox as a direct message, so the flow can answer it straight away. The trigger is set to any story, so it listens to every story you post while the template is on, and the keyword decides what starts it.

The keyword can sit inside a longer reply, in capitals or not: "discount please" starts the flow. A reply with no text, only a sticker or a photo, does not. For a closer look at what you can do with replies, see Instagram story reply automation.

2. The first message gives the code

Inrō replies with "Thanks for replying! Your code for 10% off your first order is WELCOME10." That is 73 characters. Across the 798,041 conversations in our DM Benchmark, first messages under 120 characters converted at 39%, against 22% for longer ones.

WELCOME10 is an example. You create your own code in your store and put it here.

3. A card sends them to your shop and reminds them to add the code

The next message is a link card titled "10% off your first order", with the line "Add your code at checkout." and the button "Go to the shop". The code is in the message only; the card reminds people to add it at checkout. Inrō does not apply the code for them: they type it in at checkout, in your store.

4. A tap puts them in your discount folder

Everyone who taps "Go to the shop" is added to the folder "Story discount: clicked", even if the tap comes after the reminder. Filter your Inrō inbox and CRM by that folder and you see everyone who opened your shop page, next to their conversation.

10% off link card: clicked adds the Story discount folder; not clicked after 2 hours sends a reminder

Inrō records the tap on the link, not the order. The folder lists who opened your shop page, and your store tells you who bought.

5. No tap after 2 hours: one reminder

Someone who has not tapped the card 2 hours later gets one message: "The link is right above whenever you're ready." Someone who tapped in time gets nothing more.

The 2 hours is only the wait before the reminder. The link keeps working after it, and so does the code, until you end it in your store.

What to change before you turn it on

The trigger comes set up: someone replies to any of your stories with a reply that contains DISCOUNT. Each person goes through the flow once.

Inrō story reply trigger: someone replies to your story with a reply containing the keyword DISCOUNT

Check six things before you go live:

  1. The code in your store. Create the discount code in your shop first. WELCOME10 is an example. The code you type into the flow has to match the one in your store exactly.
  2. The code in the message and on the card. Put your code in the first message, and name it on the card too if you change the card line "Add your code at checkout."
  3. The offer text. "10% off your first order" appears in the message and as the card title. Change both to your offer. Your store's code rules decide who can use the code, such as first-time buyers only.
  4. The shop link. The "Go to the shop" button points to an example inro.social address with UTM tags. Paste the page of your shop where the code applies, and tag it with the UTM link generator if you track campaigns.
  5. The keyword. Keep DISCOUNT or pick your own word, like SAVE10. Say the same word on your story.
  6. The folder and the wait. Rename "Story discount: clicked" if you run several offers. You can also change the 2-hour wait before the reminder.

Then turn the scenario on.

Best tips for your scenario

  • Create the code in your store before you turn the template on. The message gives the code, the card reminds people to add it at checkout, and your store is where it works. Give each offer its own keyword and its own code, so the replies and the orders show you which story worked.
  • Ask for the keyword on the story itself. The trigger listens to story replies only. Write "Reply DISCOUNT for 10% off your first order" as text or on a sticker. The word can sit inside a longer reply, in any case.
  • Switch on "Interrupt when you reply manually" if you answer replies by hand. It is a setting in the scenario. With it on, the reminder stops as soon as you write to the person yourself. In this copy it is off, so the reminder still goes out.
  • Change the keyword and the code in a copy for the next offer. A person who replies DISCOUNT to a later story does not get a second code, because the template runs once for each person. A copy with a new keyword and a new code starts a fresh offer.
  • Work through "Story discount: clicked" regularly. It lists who opened your shop page, not who ordered. Compare it with your orders and message the people who did not buy.
  • Keep it apart from other automations that listen for the same word. Put both in a priority folder: a folder of automations where only the highest one in the list runs when several match the same trigger.

FAQ

Can I send a discount code in an Instagram DM automatically?

Yes. This template sends your code in a DM when someone replies to your story with the keyword, then follows with a card that opens your shop and reminds them to add the code at checkout. You create the code in your store, and the shopper types it in at checkout.

Can I use it for one story only?

Out of the box it answers replies to any story, and only a reply with your keyword starts it. To tie it to particular stories, set the trigger to stories with a keyword written on them or stories with a URL.

Does the same person get the code twice?

No. The template runs once for each person, so a second DISCOUNT reply from the same person does nothing. For your next offer, change the keyword and the code in a copy of the template.

Do I need Shopify?

No. The link card opens any shop page, and the code works wherever you create it.
