Grow followers with a freebie

Want more followers from your posts without checking each one by hand? This template gives your freebie, a free workout, to everyone who comments for it, as soon as they follow you.

Grow followers with a freebie
About

Someone comments WORKOUT, follows you and taps a button, then gets your free workout by DM. Followers get it straight away. Copy the template.

Ask people to comment WORKOUT on your next post. Each one gets a DM with one button, and a tap tells Inrō to check whether they follow you. People who already follow you get the free workout link at once. Everyone else is asked to follow first, then taps "I've followed you" to get it.

What the template does, step by step

1. Someone comments WORKOUT

The flow reacts to top-level comments that contain the word WORKOUT, in capitals or not, so "workout" and "send me the WORKOUT" both count. Inrō sends the DM through its comment to DM feature and answers under the comment with one of three replies, picked at random: "Sent, check your DMs", "Just sent it to your DMs" or "It's in your DMs now 🙂". The public reply goes up once the DM has gone out.

Across the 798,041 conversations in Inrō's DM Benchmark, conversion with a public reply as well as a DM was 46%, against 29% with the DM alone.

The trigger watches one post: the first one you publish after the date in its settings. Check that date before your WORKOUT post goes up (see below).

2. One tap first

The first DM is one line and one button: "Want the free workout? Tap below to get it." The button says "Yes, send it".

It asks for a tap before anything else because Instagram lets a business send one private reply to the person who commented, and the conversation can only continue once that person responds (Meta for Developers, checked 22 October 2026). The tap is that response. The message is also short on purpose: 43 characters. In the same DM Benchmark, a first message under 120 characters converted at 39%, against 22% for longer ones.

The button waits 6 hours. Someone who does not tap it in that time gets nothing more from this template.

3. People who already follow you get the link straight away

The tap starts a Contact filter set to "They follow you". Inrō checks the follow at that moment, so the answer is current.

A follower skips the ask and goes straight to step 5, so the people who already follow you are never asked to follow.

4. Everyone else is asked to follow

People who do not follow you yet get: "Almost there. Follow this account, then tap below to get the free workout." The button says "I've followed you".

Ask for follow step in Inrō: Almost there message, I've followed you button, 24 hour wait

Each tap on "I've followed you" checks the follow again. If it is there, the free workout goes out. If it is not showing yet, they get "The follow isn't showing yet. Follow this account, then tap again." with the button again, and every new tap checks again.

The step waits up to 24 hours for that tap. The free workout goes out after a tap on "I've followed you", so the follow message asks for both: follow, then tap.

5. The free workout, and one nudge

Both paths end on the same link card: "Free workout", with the button "Open it". If the person has not opened it 2 hours later, Inrō sends one nudge: "Have you checked the link yet?"

The 2 hours is only the wait before the nudge. The link keeps working after it. Everyone who opens it goes into the folder "Free workout: clicked", even if they open it after the nudge, so you end up with a list of the people who took the freebie.

What to change before you turn it on

The trigger comes set up: comments that contain WORKOUT, on your next post, top-level comments only, and the flow runs once per person.

Comment trigger in Inrō: next post only, comments with the keyword WORKOUT

Check six things before you go live:

  1. The trigger date. Open the comment trigger. Under "Select the posts", "Next post only" reads "Automation will only trigger on the first post after" a date. Press Reset date, then Save scenario, just before you publish your WORKOUT post.
  2. The keyword. Keep WORKOUT, or pick one word that names your freebie. Say it in your caption or video.
  3. The freebie name. "The free workout" appears twice: in the first DM and in the follow message. Replace both with what you give away, a guide or a checklist for example. If you coach fitness, the workout can stay: more flows for that job are on Instagram automation for fitness coaches.
  4. Both link cards. The template has two "Free workout" cards, one for people who already follow you and one for people who just followed. Both point to the same example address. Paste your own link in each, and rename the card if your freebie is not a workout.
  5. The folder. People who open the link go into "Free workout: clicked". Rename it after your freebie so you can find the list later.
  6. Your own replies. "Interrupt when you reply manually" is off in this template, so the nudge still goes out if you answer someone by hand. Turn it on if you chat with people while the flow runs.

You can also change the waits: 6 hours for the first button, 24 hours for the follow, 2 hours before the nudge.

Versions for creators and shops

Same steps, different wording, folders and resource. Each name below opens that version to copy.

Creators: a free preset pack. Keywords PRESETPACK and PRESET PACK. The first DM asks "You asked for the free preset pack. Want it?" and the button says "Send it to me". People who follow you get a "Free preset pack" link card with the button "Get it now" straight away. Everyone else is asked "Quick one: follow me, then tap below and it's yours." Paste the download link of your own pack into both link cards. Creators version

E-commerce: a follower discount. Keyword VIPCODE. The first DM asks "Want the 10% follower discount? Tap below." and the card people get shows your code, with the button "Go to the shop". People who already follow you get the card straight away; everyone else is asked to follow first. The 10%, the code WELCOME10 and the shop address are examples: create your own code in your shop, type it into both link cards, and change the 10% in the first DM and both card titles. Best tips for your scenario

  • Write "follow and comment WORKOUT" in your caption. People who follow before they comment skip the follow message and get the link after one tap. The comment to DM caption generator can draft that caption for you.
  • Give people a reason to follow beyond the freebie. Say in the post what they will see from you next, a new workout every week for example. The freebie gets the first tap; what you post after it keeps the follow.
  • Keep the "I've followed you" button clear. The link goes out when someone taps it after following, so ask for that tap in plain words in the follow message, as the template does: "Follow this account, then tap below".
  • Add a reminder on the 24 hour branch. The Ask for follow step has a second branch, "If contact hasn't clicked and followed you after 24 hours", which the template leaves empty. A short, friendly message there brings the freebie back to mind for people who meant to follow and forgot.
  • Name the freebie in the first DM. The "Yes, send it" button is what opts the person into the conversation. When the message says exactly what they get, the tap is an easy yes.
  • Give the folder a next step. Everyone in "Free workout: clicked" was following you when they got the freebie, and opened it. When your next workout, guide or offer is ready, that list is where to start.

FAQ

How does Inrō know they followed?

It checks with Instagram when the person taps a button, so a tap without a follow does not open the gate. The follow gate glossary entry explains the check in more detail.

What if they already follow me?

They get the free workout link right after they tap "Yes, send it". The follow message only goes to people who do not follow you yet.

What if they unfollow after getting the freebie?

Nothing changes. Inrō checks the follow before it sends the link, not afterwards, so the freebie stays theirs.

Can I also collect their email?

Not with this template: it checks the follow and sends the link. Inrō has a separate template for that, Grow your email list from comments.
