Multi-choice question

Multi-choice question

Definition

A multi-choice question is a DM automation step that asks one question with fixed answers as quick reply buttons, then branches on the answer. In Inrō, a typed answer is matched by its text, then optionally by AI.

A multi-choice question is an automation step that asks a contact one question in a DM and offers fixed answers as buttons. Each answer has its own branch. In Inrō the step is called Ask a question, and it also handles answers that are typed instead of tapped.

How does a contact answer a multi-choice question?

You add the step to a flow on the Scenarios page, for example after the first DM of a comment-to-DM automation. Inrō sends the options as Instagram quick reply buttons. A tap sends the contact down that option's branch.

Contacts can also type. Meta does not show quick replies on desktop (Meta for Developers, quick replies, checked 1 October 2026). With Hide quick reply buttons on, the question goes out as plain text and every answer is typed.

How does Inrō match a typed answer to an option?

Two checks run in order:

  1. Text match. An option matches when its text appears anywhere in the reply, whatever the case. The first match from the top wins. "I'd like the red one" matches an option called Red.
  2. AI detection. If nothing matched and AI detection is on, the AI reads the reply, the recent conversation and the description under each option, then picks one option or none. Describe an option called Book a call as wants to talk to someone, and the reply "can we chat on Tuesday?" can land there.

An AI check that finds no option costs no AI credits. To match meaning on what starts a flow, see intent detection.

What happens when the answer matches no option?

The contact takes the Any other reply branch, where you can reply or hand the chat to the Inrō AI agent.

Or turn on Ask again when reply doesn't match to send a retry message, with the buttons again unless you hid them. After Maximum retries, the contact moves to the no-reply branch.

A contact who never answers takes the If contact hasn't replied after branch when your wait ends. Send follow-up if no reply sends the question again after a delay, unless the contact has written since.

Can you save the answer to the contact?

Yes. Turn on Save reply to contact property and pick a contact property. Inrō stores the text of the matched option, tapped, typed or matched by AI, and replaces any earlier value. The value shows on the contact's profile in Inrō's Instagram CRM inbox. A reply that matches nothing saves nothing.

Wait for reply branches by keyword but cannot save the reply. For using answers to sort leads, see the guide to Instagram lead qualification. More flow building blocks are in the Inrō automation glossary.
