Agent handover

Agent handover

Definition

An agent handover is a scenario step in Inrō that passes a running automation to the AI agent. The agent answers the contact until its task is done or the handover expires, and the flow continues on that branch.

An agent handover is the step that passes a running Inrō automation to the AI agent. When a scenario reaches Hand over to AI Agent, the agent answers the contact itself and the flow waits. It picks up again on one of two branches: Task completed or Handover expired.

What happens when a scenario hands over to the agent?

The agent replies to the contact's latest message straight away, unless a step just before already answered it. From then on it answers each new message, even when its activation rules would keep it quiet. This is also what makes Automation only mode work: there, the agent replies only when a scenario hands over to it.

Nothing after the step runs until the handover ends. Switch on Follow-up automatically after each message and the agent sends one follow-up if the contact has not replied by the delay you set.

What do the instructions do?

Click Add instructions to give the agent a task. Say a comment-to-DM automation sends your price list, then hands over with "Help them pick a plan and confirm which one they want". The task can include variables, and it creates the Task completed branch. Without one, the step has only Handover expired.

When the agent judges the task done, the flow continues down Task completed, where you might add the contact to a "Qualified" folder. Keep the task narrow, with a clear finish line. Handovers use AI credits.

What ends the handover without the task?

The flow follows Handover expired when:

  • the timer you set on that branch runs out
  • the conversation goes quiet long enough for the handover to lapse
  • you click Remove Agent from conversation in the Inrō inbox and CRM
  • a teammate replies by hand, from the Inbox or the Instagram app
  • the contact asks for a person and the agent passes the chat to your team

Use this branch to follow up on stalled chats.

Three endings take neither branch. If another automation messages the contact, the handover ends. A contact who lands in an excluded folder stops the run, as mid-flow interruption explains. If a teammate is already handling the chat when the step runs, the run stops there.

Is this the same as handing a chat to a person?

No. Support software uses agent handover for the opposite move: an automated chat passing the conversation to a human. In Inrō that direction is human handover, set on the agent, not in a scenario. This step goes from your flow to the Inrō AI agent for Instagram DMs. More terms are in the Inrō automation glossary.
