Random branch

Definition

A random branch is a step in an Inrō flow, called A/B testing in the builder, that sends each contact down one of two paths at random, by a percentage you set, to test two versions of a DM.

A random branch is a step in an Inrō flow that sends each contact down one of two paths at random, by a percentage you set, so you can test two versions of a DM against each other. In the builder the step is called A/B testing. It sends nothing itself: it only decides which path a contact takes.

How does a random branch split your contacts?

The step has two branches, Option A and Option B. You set Option A's share on a slider from 0% to 100% in steps of 10, and Option B gets the rest. The default is 50/50. Because the slider moves in steps of 10, 70/30 or 90/10 work but 75/25 does not.

The pick happens when a contact reaches the step: a random draw, weighted by your percentage. At 70/30, each contact has a 70% chance of landing on Option A. On a small number of contacts, expect about 70%, not exactly 70%.

Where do you find the A/B testing step?

It sits in the Logic section of the step picker, next to conditions. You can add it to any automation, including comment-to-DM automations, and to DM campaigns. It is a Pro feature; see Inrō plans and prices.

The split on its own is not a contact activation; the first step after it that does something, such as sending a DM, is.

ManyChat calls its equivalent step a Randomizer (ManyChat help centre, checked 30 September 2026).

What can you test on each branch?

Each branch is independent. After it you can put:

  • a different first message
  • a different button or link
  • a different qualifying question, followed by a wait for reply step
  • a whole different flow

Change one thing at a time.

How do you read the result?

Open the flow's Insights view and compare the steps on each branch. Each message step shows its own Sent and Read counts, plus Replied, Liked or Converted where they apply. Click a number to see the contacts behind it.

Inrō does not pick a winner or shift traffic for you. You decide when the test is done, then move the slider or keep the version that won. The full setup, with each step in the builder, is in how to A/B test an Instagram DM flow. For other terms, see the Inrō glossary of Instagram automation.
