Instagram rate limit

Instagram rate limit

Definition

An Instagram rate limit is the cap Meta sets on how many API calls an app can make for one Instagram professional account in a set time, such as sends per second or private replies per hour.

An Instagram rate limit is the cap Meta puts on how many API calls an app can make for one Instagram professional account in a set time. Each automated DM is one call, and so is each DM you send from the Inrō Inbox.

DMs typed in the Instagram app itself are not API calls; their daily count is in how many DMs you can send on Instagram.

What are Instagram's own DM rate limits?

Meta counts calls per Instagram professional account and per API. Its published limits for messaging are (Meta for Developers, Messenger Platform rate limits, updated March 23, 2026, checked October 2026):

  • 300 calls a second for messages with text, links, reactions or stickers
  • 10 calls a second for messages with audio or video
  • 750 calls an hour for private replies to comments on posts and reels
  • 100 calls a second for private replies to Instagram Live comments

The same page names two more ceilings. An app may be rate limited if it sends too many messages to a single thread. And an account that sends and receives more than 72,000 messages stops showing new messages in its Instagram inbox and cannot send until the volume drops.

The 750 private replies an hour (Meta rate limits, March 2026) is the limit a busy comment-to-DM automation meets first, since each DM answering a comment is a private reply.

What happens when an account hits the limit?

Meta refuses the call, and the message is not sent. On the Instagram Platform, the limit error is code 80002 (Meta for Developers, Graph API rate limits, checked October 2026).

In Inrō, a send that Instagram refuses for a rate limit does not go out. The step is marked Failed and that scenario execution stops there. Once the limit has cleared, you can retry the failed runs from the scenario.

A message refused because the contact last wrote too long ago is a different rule: see the 24-hour messaging window.

Is Limit reached in Inrō an Instagram rate limit?

No. A run or a DM campaign marked Limit reached is held because your account reached its plan's cap on contact activations. Each plan's cap is on Inrō plans and prices.

A similar name: Limit frequency per contact, under a scenario's Advanced options. It caps how often one contact can go through that scenario. It does not change how fast Instagram lets you send.
