Comment to DM

Comment to DM is an Instagram automation that answers a comment on your post with a direct message. Someone comments, and they get a DM, for example with the link the post promised. In Inrō you set it up with the Comment-to-DM automation for Instagram posts, which can also post a public reply under the comment.

What starts a comment to DM automation?

In Inrō, the comment trigger has two filters.

• Which posts: All posts, Select posts manually, Posts with keyword(s) in caption, Posts with URL in caption, or Next post only
• Which comments: All comments, Comments with keyword(s), AI-detected intent, or Comments that tag someone

Your own comments never start it. Replies under a comment start it only when you tick Also trigger on replies to comments. To match comments by meaning instead of by keyword, see AI intent detection.

Why can the first DM be the only one?

Meta treats a DM sent in answer to a comment as a private reply. The Meta for Developers documentation on private replies allows one message to the commenter, sent within 7 days of the comment. More messages can follow only after the person responds, and within 24 hours of that response (Meta, checked 1 October 2026).

Inrō sends the first DM of the run as that private reply. In the Comment-to-DM wizard, the public reply goes up only after the DM has gone out, so a failed DM means no public reply. When you switch it on, it can also answer older comments still inside Meta's 7-day window.

How does the link reach the commenter?

The wizard keeps the link out of the first DM. That DM asks a question, in one of three forms:

• Simple question: a message with one button, Receive the link by default
• Ask for follow
• Ask for email

The contact's answer opens the conversation, so the rest of the flow can run. Send a link then delivers a tracked link. If the contact has not clicked it after the wait you set, Follow up with a DM sends a reminder. A click can add the contact to a folder in the Inrō inbox and CRM or send an event to your Meta Pixel.

What changes when you build the flow yourself?

The same Meta rule applies in a custom scenario. Put a wait for reply step after your first DM; the builder flags a later DM that has no reply step before it.
