Button template

Button template

Definition

A button template is an Instagram DM with text, an optional image and up to three tappable buttons. In Inrō each button opens a link or sends the contact down its own path in the flow.

A DM button template is an Instagram message with text and up to three tappable buttons. In Inrō the step is called Send message with button. Each button either opens a link or sends the contact down its own path in the flow, so one tap decides what happens next.

What can one button message hold?

The limits come from Meta's button template for Instagram (Meta for Developers, button template, checked 1 October 2026) and from the fields in Inrō:

  • message text of up to 640 characters
  • up to three buttons, each with a short label
  • an optional image, from your media library or fetched from the web page your first button links to (Fetch image from website URL)

Add an image and Inrō sends Meta's generic template instead. The text then becomes the title under the image, capped at 80 characters. For several cards side by side, use a card template.

What happens when someone taps a button?

You choose what each button does. A plain button gets its own When button is clicked path in the builder: put a link, a question or a whole new flow after it. A button with Add a URL opens the page and does not branch.

With two or more plain buttons, a setting decides how many count. Allow one click on only one button means the first tap sets the path. Switch it to each button and the contact can tap several, running each path.

This is different from an Instagram quick reply. Instagram removes quick replies once one is tapped and posts its text as a message; a button template can also open a link.

What happens if nobody taps?

Under the step sits a second path, If button has not been clicked after, with a wait you set. When the wait ends and no plain button was tapped, the contact goes down that path. Use it for a reminder or a softer offer.

When do you use a button template?

Use it when the next step depends on a choice, or when the first DM needs an easy answer. On a comment, Instagram lets you send one private reply, then more only after the person responds (Meta for Developers, private replies, checked 1 October 2026). A button gives them one tap to answer. It is also the default first DM in Inrō's comment-to-DM automations.

The same step works in DM campaigns, where you can split a list by what each contact taps, and in scenarios you build through the Inrō API. For other terms, see the Inrō glossary of Instagram automation.
