Instagram icebreaker

Instagram icebreaker

Definition

An Instagram icebreaker is one of up to four suggested questions a business sets for its Instagram DMs. A person taps one to start the conversation, and in Inrō that tap can start an automation.

An Instagram icebreaker is a suggested question you set for your Instagram DMs. A person taps it to start a conversation with you, without typing a word. In Inrō, that tap can start an automation through the trigger "Someone clicks an ice breaker".

57% of people who tap an icebreaker go on to click a link or button (Inrō production data).

How many icebreakers can you have on Instagram?

Four. The Meta for Developers documentation on ice breakers caps an account at 4 questions and says the feature is not available on desktop (Meta, checked 1 October 2026).

Meta also allows a different list per language. Inrō manages your default list and leaves other language lists untouched.

What happens when someone taps an icebreaker?

Instagram sends you the question the person tapped, with a hidden code that identifies the icebreaker. Inrō matches a trigger to that code, or to the question's wording.

What runs next is your choice. The app offers three starting points:

  • Reply with a message: answer straight away, in your own words
  • File them in a folder: send nothing, but sort the contact for later
  • Ask a few questions: qualify the contact before you reply

If no scenario answers the tap, your Inrō AI agent can reply instead, depending on when you set it to reply. If neither does, the app marks the icebreaker "Nothing answers this". The icebreaker trigger is not locked on the Free plan.

Where do you manage icebreakers in Inrō?

On the Scenarios page, open the "Manage ice breakers" card and click Settings. You add, reword and delete questions there, and the changes go straight to Instagram.

Inrō reads your icebreakers from Instagram each time, so a change made in another app shows up too. Two safeguards follow from that:

  • If the icebreaker a trigger answers is no longer on Instagram, the scenario shows a warning.
  • A trigger that matches the question's wording is labelled "Matched by wording". Rewording that question stops it firing. A trigger where you pick the icebreaker from the list keeps working after a rewording.

Developers can manage the same list through the Inrō public API or the Inrō MCP server.

How are icebreakers different from the persistent menu and quick replies?

Two neighbours are easy to confuse. The Instagram persistent menu stays visible in the conversation at all times. A quick reply is a button inside a message you send, not a question waiting before the first one.
