TL;DR
Leaving ManyChat?
Instagram-only automation with the AI Agent included from €12.99. Free plan covers 100 active contacts, 3 automations and 50 AI credits, no card.
The right ManyChat alternative depends on which part of ManyChat you are trying to replace. People leave for three different reasons, and each points at a different category of tool: the bill grew faster than the business, the product does more channels than you need and less Instagram than you want, or the team outgrew a flow builder and needs a real shared inbox. Work out which one applies before you compare features.
Four reasons come up repeatedly, and only two of them are actually ManyChat's fault.
The bill scales with contacts you are not messaging. ManyChat bills on active contacts, with tiers at 250, 2,500, 7,500 and 25,000. Go past your allotment and you pay roughly $0.10 per extra contact or move up a tier. That model is fine when growth is steady and painful when one Reel brings in thousands of people who comment once and never return. If your growth is spiky, you are paying for the spike long after it passed.
It was built for Messenger first. ManyChat started on Facebook Messenger and added Instagram later, and the shape of the product still reflects that. If Instagram is one of several channels you run, this is a feature. If Instagram is the whole business, you are paying for surface area you never touch while wanting depth the product does not have.
Broadcasts and automations fail in ways that are hard to debug. This is the most common complaint and it is also the most misunderstood, so it is worth separating what is a tool problem from what is a platform rule. See the section below.
Flow maintenance grows faster than the business. Flow builders are excellent until you have thirty flows and cannot remember which one owns which trigger. At that point people want either an AI layer that handles the unanticipated cases, or a shared inbox where a human picks up cleanly.
If your broadcast did not deliver, the cause is usually Meta's rules rather than the tool sitting on top of them. Instagram limits who you can message outside an open conversation window, and a broadcast to contacts who have not messaged you recently will not go out no matter which platform sends it. Any vendor promising guaranteed delivery on Instagram broadcasts is describing something that is not in their control.
What a tool can actually influence is narrower, and it is what to compare on: whether you can segment precisely enough to only send to contacts who are eligible, whether the interface tells you why a send failed rather than silently dropping it, and whether follow-ups can be automated to people who did not engage. Switching tools helps with the second and third. It does not remove the first.
A comparison page that only lists faults is not useful, so here is the honest other side. ManyChat has the largest template library in the category, the most third-party tutorials, and the widest channel coverage of any tool at its price point, covering Messenger, WhatsApp, TikTok, Telegram and SMS alongside Instagram. Its flow builder is mature and its AI replies are included from the $29 Pro plan rather than sold separately.
If you run several channels, if you like designing flows visually, or if you need to hand a documented system to someone else, staying put is a reasonable answer. The alternatives below are better only for specific situations.
Chatfuel. Covers Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp from one visual builder. Chatfuel Light is free with no card and includes the inbox, builder and segmentation but no AI. AI PRO is $49 a month, or 29% less billed yearly, and adds the AI sales manager, knowledge base and lead-qualification funnels. Flat fee rather than per contact, so a viral week does not change the bill. The tradeoff against ManyChat is fewer channels; the tradeoff on price is that the AI tier costs more than ManyChat's.
Inrō. Instagram only, connected through Meta's official API as a certified Tech Provider. Triggers cover comments, Story replies, mentions, Live comments and click-to-DM ads. Billing is per contact activated in a month rather than per contact stored. Free plan covers 100 active contacts, 3 automations, 3 DM campaigns and 50 AI Agent credits with no card. Pro starts at €12.99 a month with the AI Agent included and unlimited messaging per contact. The tradeoff is real and worth stating: if you need WhatsApp or Messenger, this is the wrong tool.
This is a different product category, not a cheaper ManyChat. These tools are built around humans handling conversations with automation assisting, rather than automation handling conversations with humans intervening.
Freshchat sits inside the Freshworks support suite and makes sense if you already use Freshdesk. Respond.io is the strongest option for routing, assignment and reporting across Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, SMS and email, and it is priced for teams rather than solo operators. Tidio leans toward website live chat with messaging channels attached.
Choose one of these when more than one person touches the inbox and the problem you are solving is who answers what, not what fires automatically.
Botpress gives you the most control and expects the most from you, and is the right answer if you have a specific workflow and someone technical to build it. UChat covers many channels from one visual builder, which suits agencies running different setups per client, at the cost of more configuration to maintain.
Plenty of people pay for a full automation platform to do one job. LinkDM is free for one account and 1,000 DMs a month, $19 for three accounts and 25,000 DMs, and $99 for ten accounts and 300,000 DMs, with the pacing controls on the top tier. InstantDM has no permanent free plan, a 7-day trial, then $12 or $29.99 a month, with account safety mode and follow-up messages only on the higher tier. Both also handle Facebook comments.
The catch with both is that the contact is not stored anywhere you can act on later. If you ever want to follow up with the people who clicked and did not buy, you will replace the tool.
The number that matters is not the entry price, it is the cheapest plan that includes what you actually came for. Figures below are from each vendor's own pricing page, checked July 2026.
Respond.io, Freshchat, Tidio, UChat and Botpress are not in the table because they are priced per seat, per resolution or per usage in ways that do not compare cleanly against per-contact plans. Check each vendor's own page against your team size rather than trusting any roundup, including this one.
Two things fall out of the table. The cheapest way into a conversational AI agent varies by nearly four times depending on which tool you pick. And per-contact billing and flat billing fail in opposite directions: per-contact costs more in a viral month and nothing in a quiet one, flat costs the same either way but caps what you can send.
Almost nothing, and it is better to know that upfront than to discover it mid-migration.
Your flows do not transfer. There is no shared export format between platforms, so every automation is rebuilt. Budget more time for this than you think, and treat it as a chance to cut the flows you built and never used rather than recreating all of them.
Your contact list does not transfer either. Instagram's API does not allow contact lists to be imported into a DM automation tool, so your list rebuilds as people engage with the new automations. Export whatever emails and phone numbers you captured before you cancel anything, because those are yours and they do move.
Analytics history stays where it is. If past performance matters for your reporting, export it before closing the account.
One practical rule for the cutover: do not run both tools on the same Instagram account at once. Two platforms listening to the same trigger will collide, and the person on the other end gets duplicate messages or none. Build and test in the new tool, switch the old automations off, then activate.
Head-to-head detail for each tool sits on its own page. Start with Inrō vs ManyChat, or browse the full alternatives hub. If you are earlier in the process and not sure which category of tool you need, the Instagram DM automation tools guide covers the four architectures and what each trades away.
For Instagram specifically, the two closest alternatives are Chatfuel and Inrō. Chatfuel keeps a visual builder and adds Facebook and WhatsApp, with AI on the $49 tier. Inrō drops the other channels entirely in exchange for deeper Instagram triggers and per-activation billing, with AI included from €12.99. If Instagram is not actually your priority, neither is the right answer and you should look at the shared inbox category instead.
Most broadcast failures come from Meta's messaging rules rather than the tool. Instagram restricts who you can message outside an open conversation window, so a broadcast to contacts who have not messaged you recently will not deliver regardless of platform. Check your segment before blaming the tool. What does vary between tools is how precisely you can segment eligible contacts and whether you are told why a send failed.
Several, but check where each caps. Chatfuel Light is free across three channels with no AI. LinkDM is free for one account and 1,000 DMs a month. Inrō's free plan covers 100 active contacts, 3 automations, 3 DM campaigns and 50 AI credits. ManyChat's own free tier allows 25 active contacts. InstantDM and respond.io offer trials rather than permanent free plans.
At the entry tier, yes: $14 a month beats most. The picture changes with scale and with AI. Contacts are metered, so a viral post can push you up a tier or into overage at roughly $0.10 per extra contact, and the alternatives with flat or per-activation billing do not move. Compare what a busy month costs, not what the starter plan costs.
ManyChat connects through Meta's official messaging API and operates within Meta's permissions and rate limits, as do Chatfuel, Inrō, LinkDM and InstantDM. Tools that ask for your Instagram password or log in through a browser session are the ones that create account risk. Verify the connection and permissions in your own Meta Business settings.
Not directly. Instagram's API does not permit importing contact lists into a DM automation platform, so your list rebuilds through engagement with the new automations. Export any emails or phone numbers you collected before cancelling, since that data is portable even though the Instagram contacts are not.
Yes. No platform in this category shares an export format with another, so flows are recreated by hand. Most people find they rebuild fewer than they had, because a migration is when you notice how many flows were never firing.
Not on the same Instagram account. Two tools listening to the same trigger collide, and your contacts get duplicate messages or nothing at all. Build and test in the new tool first, switch the old automations off, then activate. Keeping the old account open with automations disabled for a few weeks is a sensible fallback.
