TL;DR

TL;DR

  • Hashtags are not dead, but their role shifted from boosting reach to helping categorisation and search. Instagram's own head has said they do not meaningfully increase distribution.
  • Use three to ten relevant tags, not all 30. Stuffing dilutes the signal and reads as spammy.
  • Instagram removed the ability to follow hashtags in December 2024, ending the last way they passively delivered reach.
  • What drives reach now is watch time, saves, shares and comments, plus keyword-rich captions, not tags.
  • A hashtag helps someone find you. A comment-to-DM keyword turns that discovery into a contact you keep.

Instagram hashtags are not dead, but their job has changed. They used to be a reach hack: pile on thirty tags and get pushed to people who did not follow you. That era is over. Instagram's own head, Adam Mosseri, has said plainly that hashtags do not meaningfully boost reach. What they still do is help categorise your content and surface it in search and Explore, which makes them a discovery tool rather than a growth lever. Use a few relevant ones and move your real effort to the caption.

How hashtags actually work now

A hashtag tells Instagram, and anyone searching, what a post is about. It is one signal among many the platform reads to understand and place your content, alongside your caption text, your alt text, watch time, and how people engage. That is the whole of their current role: context, not amplification.

The clearest sign of the shift is a feature Instagram removed. On December 13, 2024, it took away the ability to follow hashtags. Before that, you could tap Follow on a tag like #fitnessmotivation and see posts using it mixed into your home feed. Now you cannot follow tags at all, and any you previously followed no longer inject anything into your feed. That was the last mechanism by which a hashtag passively delivered reach, and it is gone.

Instagram's reasoning was twofold: follow-based hashtag feeds were an easy route for spammers to push low-quality posts into people's feeds by stuffing trending tags, and the company is steering discovery toward its recommendation systems instead, the ones that decide what shows in Explore, Reels and the feed based on behaviour rather than on a tag you followed once. Hashtags remain searchable and still feed Explore. What ended is the follow-based feed.

How many to use

The cap is 30. That is not a target.

The common guidance now, and it matches how the platform treats them, is a small set of highly relevant tags rather than a wall of generic ones. Somewhere around three to ten, chosen because they actually describe the post, does more than thirty broad tags that describe half of Instagram. Stuffing dilutes the signal and reads as spammy, which is the opposite of what you want.

Worth watching: there were reports in late 2025 that Instagram was testing a limit of around three hashtags per post. Nothing has been confirmed, so do not restructure everything around it, but it points the same direction the guidance already does, which is fewer and more specific.

Quick answers to the common questions

Are they case sensitive? No. #InstaGrowth and #instagrowth behave identically. Capitals only help readability, so #TravelTips is easier to read than #traveltips but works the same.

Can they have spaces? No. A space ends the tag, so #my hashtag only tags #my. Use letters, numbers or underscores and nothing else.

Caption or first comment? Either works, and Instagram has said it makes no difference to how the post is treated. First comment keeps the caption clean; that is the only reason to prefer it.

Which hashtags get the most engagement? Niche and community tags relevant to your specific content, not broad ones. A tag with millions of posts buries you instantly; a specific one reaches a smaller, more relevant audience that is more likely to act. A trending tag helps only if your content genuinely fits it.

What actually drives reach now

If hashtags are not the lever, it is worth being clear about what is, so effort goes to the right place.

Instagram now weights viewer behaviour far more heavily: whether people keep watching, whether they save or share, whether they comment. A Reel that holds attention and gets sent to a friend travels; a Reel with thirty perfect hashtags and a weak hook does not. Saves and shares in particular now count for more than raw likes, so a useful test before posting is whether anyone would actually save this to come back to, or send it to a friend. Keyword-rich captions and on-screen text also do more for discovery now than tags, because the platform reads them to understand and surface content in search. Write the phrases your audience would actually type, in plain language, rather than a block of tags.

So the honest hierarchy is: good content first, then a caption written for both people and search, then a few relevant hashtags as labels. Anyone selling hashtags as a growth strategy is describing a version of Instagram that ended a while ago.

If you told people to "follow our hashtag"

One practical casualty of the December 2024 change is the branded-hashtag call to action. If you ever asked your audience to follow a hashtag for updates, that no longer does anything, because nobody can follow a tag anymore. A branded hashtag is now useful for searchability and for collecting user posts in one place, not for pushing content to people.

The replacement is a call to action that builds something you control. Instead of "follow our hashtag", the versions that still work are turn on notifications, join our broadcast channel, or comment a keyword and we will send you the thing. The last of those is the strongest, because it turns a passive follow into an actual contact.

Turning discovery into something you keep

Here is the part hashtags cannot do, however well you use them. A hashtag might help someone find your post. It does nothing to turn that person into a contact you can reach again. They see the post, maybe follow, and are otherwise gone.

That gap is where a comment-to-DM keyword fits. Discovery brings someone to the post; a keyword in the caption gives them a reason to act, and when they comment it, they get a DM and become a contact. So the hashtag does its small job of surfacing the content, and the keyword does the larger job of capturing the person who showed up. The mechanics are in sending links in Instagram DMs, and the same logic applied to Reels specifically is in generating leads from Reels.

The metric worth watching also changes with this. Likes on a hashtag-heavy post tell you little. Profile visits, new follows and DMs from a post tell you whether discovery actually turned into anything, which is what you are really after. Where to find those is covered in reading Reels insights.

FAQs

Are Instagram hashtags dead?

No, but they are no longer a reach hack. They help categorise content and surface it in search and Explore. What is dead is the idea that piling on hashtags boosts distribution, which Instagram itself has said does not happen.

Can you still follow a hashtag on Instagram?

No. Instagram removed the ability to follow hashtags on December 13, 2024. You can still use them on posts and search them, but following a tag to see its posts in your feed is no longer possible, and tags you followed before then stopped appearing.

Are hashtags still relevant in 2026?

Yes, for search inside Instagram, for Explore, and for niche discovery. Just not as a growth lever. Treat them as labels that help the right people find a post, not as a way to reach more people.

How many hashtags should I use?

Around three to ten that genuinely describe the post beats using all 30. There were also unconfirmed reports in late 2025 that Instagram may cap posts at roughly three, which points the same way: fewer and more specific.

Are Instagram hashtags case sensitive?

No. Capitalisation only affects readability, not how Instagram reads the tag. #TravelTips and #traveltips are the same tag.

Should hashtags go in the caption or the first comment?

Either. Instagram has said it makes no difference to reach, so it comes down to whether you want them visible in the caption or tucked into the first comment to keep it clean.

Why are my hashtags not working like before?

Because their role changed. Instagram now weights watch time, saves, shares and comments far more than tags, and it removed hashtag following in December 2024. Hashtags help discovery, but they no longer drive reach the way they once did.
