Instagram Story comments are public, visible to everyone who can view that Story. Here's exactly how they work, who can see them, how long they last, and how to turn them off.

TL;DR
Instagram just made Stories more… social.
Until now, you could only interact with Stories by:
With the latest update, you can now publicly comment on Instagram Stories. Comments appear on the Story itself and are visible to everyone who can view that Story. It’s a big shift from “1:1 reactions in DMs” to more community-style Story conversations.
There are some important rules and limitations though, especially around who can comment and how long comments last. Let’s walk through how Instagram Story comments work, how to use them, and what this means for creators and brands.
Instagram’s new Story comments feature lets followers post text comments under your Stories that are:
A few key details:
If you don’t want Story comments at all, you can switch back to the “classic” setup where people can only interact via private replies or likes.

If you have access to the feature, here’s how to comment on Instagram Stories:
Your comment will now appear publicly on that Story for anyone in the allowed audience to see, and it will disappear when the Story does (after 24 hours), unless the Story is saved as a Highlight.
Note: If you don’t see the comment field, it may mean Story replies are disabled for that account, or you’re not a mutual follower.
On paper this is “just another feature”, but in practice it changes how people interact with your Stories.
Before: Stories felt like one-to-one streams — people reacted or replied privately.
Now: Story comments make them feel more like mini discussion threads that everyone can see:
For creators, this is huge for parasocial depth and “I feel like I’m in the room” energy.
Public comments give Stories an extra engagement type beyond views, likes, and DM replies.
Platforms rarely spell out the algorithm in detail, but it’s safe to assume:
So even if comments are limited to mutual followers, they still add valuable interactions that can help nudge your content in the right direction.
Instagram has intentionally restricted who can comment, at least in the default version:
This helps keep Story comments more intimate and protected compared to open post comments, and reduces:
You don’t have to treat Story comments as just “nice to have.” You can design Stories that earn meaningful comments.
Short answer: both, but with different roles.
Story comments are best for:
Story DMs are best for:
That’s why it’s smart to design Stories that invite both:
From there, Inrō can:
Story comments warm people up and give your Stories life. DMs (plus automation) help you actually convert that attention. If you use Reels alongside Stories, read our guide on how to generate leads from Instagram Reels, the same DM automation principles apply across both formats.
Story comments create visibility. But the real conversion happens when a commenter moves into your DMs.
Here is the exact flow:

You set this up once. After that, every Story comment that converts to a DM keyword gets handled without you touching your inbox.
The most effective keyword prompts for Stories:
Short, specific, low friction. People act on them because the payoff is immediate and clear.
By default, Instagram only allows mutual followers (people you follow back) to comment on your Stories. This reduces spam and keeps conversations more personal. You can also adjust Story reply settings in Settings → Privacy → Story to limit or disable replies/comments.
Story comments are public — everyone who can view that Story can see them. This is different from Story replies, which land in your DMs and are only visible between you and the person replying.
Story comments last as long as the Story itself: 24 hours. When the Story disappears, so do the comments. If you save that Story to a Highlight, the comments can remain visible with it.
Yes. You can:
You can also delete individual comments that break your community rules or Instagram’s Community Guidelines.
No. If you comment on someone’s Story, that comment is public to everyone who can see that Story. If you prefer private interaction, send a DM reply instead of using the public comment field.
Instagram doesn’t give exact formulas, but public comments are a strong engagement signal, just like likes, saves, and replies. More engagement generally helps your Stories perform better with the algorithm and stay top of mind in your followers’ Story tray.
Not directly, Story comments are public and don't trigger DM automations. However, when a Story comment leads to a private DM (which often happens when you reply "I'll DM you the details"), that DM can be automated with Inrō. The most effective strategy is to use Story comments to create public engagement, then funnel serious leads into DMs using a keyword trigger — from there, automation handles the rest.
A Story reply sent through the DM field (tap the message box at the bottom) is private, only you and the creator can see it. This is different from the public Story comments feature. Public comments appear on the Story itself and are visible to everyone who can view that Story. If you want a private conversation, use the reply/message field. If you use the comment option (where available), that comment is public.
Go to Settings, then Privacy, then Story. Under "Story replies," select who can reply to your Stories, you can choose Everyone, People you follow, or Off. Selecting Off disables both private replies and public comments on your Stories. You can also disable comments on individual Stories when posting by tapping the settings icon before sharing.
Everyone who can view that Story can see your public comment — this includes all of the creator's followers if their account is public, or their approved followers if their account is private. Your comment is not visible only to the creator. If you want only the creator to see your message, use the private reply field (tap the message box) instead of the public comment option.
